Helen Roome graduated with a BSc in Occupational therapy (OT) from the University of the Witwatersrand in 1996. She went on to gain over 20 years of broad clinical experience in OT adult physical and mental health rehabilitation, in acute and chronic settings, in the public and private sectors of Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.
Over the past 10 years, Helen has achieved recognition in the local and international pain community. She completed the PG. Dip. in Interdisciplinary Pain Management at the University of Cape Town with distinction and focussed her OT practice on supporting people living with persistent pain through individual and group therapy.
Helen developed a special interest in Fibromyalgia and established a Fibromyalgia educational support group 8 years ago, which she now co-facilitates with people living with the condition. In 2023, she published the popular book “Your Pain Playbook: effective daily strategies for life beyond pain” to support people in their self-management of their persistent pain. In addition, she has authored or contributed to a number of published articles; engaged extensively in CPD-accredited training of other practitioners from all disciplines; and presented at several national and international congresses on pain-related topics.
Helen is the past-chairperson of the OT Pain Management Group (OTPMG) of SA, a PainSA council member, and holds other leadership roles in the NGO sector.
Apart from her health science background, Helen’s work is also informed by her Practical diploma in Labour Law (UNISA) and her MA (Practical Theology – Tabor college, AUS).
Juli-Ann Riley obtained her BSc in Physiotherapy from the University of Stellenbosch in 1999 and, aside from a year working in the UK, has dedicated her career to private physiotherapy practice. Her primary focus is on musculoskeletal conditions and chronic pain. She completed the year-long Advanced Neuromuscular Course through the South African Society of Physiotherapy with distinction, receiving the award for top student, and went on to lecture and examine on this course for ten years.
Juli was one of the first South African practitioners to be trained as an IASP Pain Ambassador and has since lectured widely on pain principles to other healthcare professionals. She has also completed the PGAP program and the Low Back and Neck Stratification program. Her research on lumbar radiculopathy was published in the South African Physiotherapy Journal.
Juli currently leads a multi-site physiotherapy practice near Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, employing and mentoring 4 physiotherapists. In addition to her clinical work in musculoskeletal and chronic pain, and co-presenting pain courses with Helen Roome, Juli regularly provides pain assessments and rehabilitation in support of return to work for employees with persistent pain referred through the insurance industry.
As a partnership, Helen and Juli have grown a reputation over recent years for providing:
As an interdisciplinary partnership of experts in the pain care field, we deliver online and in-person programmes, events and resources to suit individual and corporate needs.
We offer a pain rehabilitation programme focussed on self-management for anyone with persistent pain and a resilience-building programme specifically aimed at preventing the development of persistent pain amongst employees. Both programmes can be delivered online or in person.
This 6–8-week programme is delivered through an interdisciplinary partnership in a small peer group setting, creating unique opportunities for participants. Through support, social persuasion and modelling, individuals can experience mindset shifts, develop mastery of essential skills, and adopt behavioural changes that lead to lasting results.
This group programme is structured around the popular book “Your Pain Playbook” by Helen Roome to teach the key strategies and skills needed for successful pain self-management, including pain science education, physical activity, sleep hygiene, goal setting and more.
These bespoke programmes are aimed at preventing the development of chronic pain, whilst enhancing overall wellbeing, quality of life and productivity. They are tailored to the needs of employees at different levels of the organisation, from entry-level workers to CEOs.
R&R resilience-building programmes can be adapted and delivered in a variety of formats and include specific pain-preventative and productivity-optimisation measures, like pain science education, ergonomics, stress management and more.
Since these programmes are tailored to the unique needs of each group of employees, pricing is flexible to ensure the best value and impact for your organisation.

The programme improved our clients’ understanding of the multifaceted nature of persistent pain, empowered them with practical tools for managing their pain themselves, and provided a supportive group setting that made them feel validated and less isolated.
Client feedback has been consistently positive – with many expressing that the programme provided a sense of relief and a renewed ability to approach pain self-management proactively. They reported feeling enabled to set and pursue meaningful goals, leading to a more active engagement in daily activities/valued roles.
